The Best Immune System Booster

Nature is the best medicine.

Deep in the rain forests of Brazil hides a potent medicine grown wild and free, which has been keeping the natives healthy for generations. In the mid 60's, scientists from America and Japan observed that native Brazilians living in the mountainous areas near Sao Paulo were extremely healthy with very few cancers or immune system related diseases. As part of their healthy daily diet, this population consumed a wild Brazilian mushroom which, with its ordinary appearance, contains healing properties that make it quite extraordinary.

It is called the Agaricus blazei Murill.

Behind the name

Agaricus blazei Murill is the scientific name for this Brazilian mushroom. For the science nerds, Agaricus is the Latin name for a genus of mushrooms within the Basidiomycota division of mushrooms. The Agaricus genus contains the most widely consumed varieties of mushrooms today, including portobello mushrooms, button mushrooms, and cremini mushrooms.

Blazei simply means "of Brazil," and Murill is named after the taxonomist (person who names things) who first discovered this mushroom. Murill published his discoveries in the Quarterly Journal of Florida Academy of Science in 1945. Since then, scientists around the world have found the Agaricus blazei Murill to be one of the most effective naturally occurring foods for enhancing the immune system, particularly in the prevention and treatment of cancer.

This mushroom may also be referred to by other names including: A. blazei, Agaricus, Agaricus blazei, Agaricus blazei M., Brazil mushroom, Sun mushroom, Champignon Agaric, Champignon Brésillen, Champignon du Brésil, Kawariharatake, or Himematsutake.

Health benefits

Scientists from around the world including Japan, China and the United States have been keen to study Agaricus blazei to understand the mushroom's health benefits and how it works. Research has shown that ingesting the mushroom or extracts of the mushroom can be used to effectively treat a wide range of health conditions including infections, allergies, asthma, cancer, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, arteriosclerosis (hardening of the artery walls), liver disease, blood disorders, and digestive problems.

Fighting cancer: how it works

The two fundamental ways in which A. blazei fights cancer is (1) stimulating the body's own immune system, a process known as immunopotentiation, and (2) directly inhibiting the cancer's ability for angiogenesis, which is the process by which new blood vessels are formed to supply it with the nutrients needed for growth.

Current research shows that this mushroom is rich in a specific kind of sugar, or polysaccharide, called β-glucans, which is known to stimulate the body's immune system. Not only are polysaccharides an essential carbohydrate in fueling our body and giving us energy, this particular polysaccharide has been shown to help fight tumors, infections, inflammations, allergies and asthma.

In addition to boosting the body's natural immunity, A. blazei helps in retarding cancer growth and reducing the effects of cancer-causing agents, inducing a self-destructing process known as apoptosis in cancerous cells.
